Edinburgh Defence Precinct to house new radar tech

South Australia’s Edinburgh Defence Precinct will be home to advanced long-range radar systems from 2027, after it was announced Australian manufacturer CEA Technologies would equip the Australian Army with the cutting-edge technology.

The Canberra-headquartered company, which has an Adelaide office, will provide 14 multi-mission phased array radars (MMPARs) to the Army, under a $272 million contract with the Australian Government.

The radars will enhance the Army’s long-range fires capability by improving monitoring of potential threats. Once completed, the radars will be employed  by the 10th Brigade based at Edinburgh Defence Precinct, enhancing its operational effectiveness.

The 10th Brigade is a critical component of the ADF’s Long Range Strike and Air Mobile Defence capabilities and is relocating to state-of-the-art facilities at RAAF Base Edinburgh this year.

In addition to enhancing the Army’s long-range fires capability, the government’s investment in the new radar technology is expected to create over 700 jobs in Canberra and across Australia.

Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery Pat Conroy MP said the contract with CEA Technologies demonstrates the government’s commitment to building the nation’s sovereign Defence capability.

“CEA Technologies is one of Defence’s most critical suppliers. These domestically manufactured radars are testament to the ingenuity and expertise in Australia’s defence industry,” he said.

In the past five years, CEA Technologies has grown its workforce by 63 per cent, expanded its facilities and developed its advanced systems to meet the growing demand for complex radar solutions in Australia and internationally.

CEA Techologies’s Adelaide team of 30 employees focuses on mechanical design and land-based support. The company’s industry-leading phased array radar systems, including the CEAFAR and CEAMOUNT, provide unmatched situational awareness and tracking capabilities across air, land, and sea domains.
